Get Schooled on Medicinal Mushrooms: Articles, Videos, Podcasts and More

If you happen to live in a neighborhood like Silverlake or Williamsburg, you probably can’t walk down the block without seeing a sign for mushroom lattes or chaga chocolates. Are mushrooms truly the new superfood, a daily must-do, or just another wellness fad? Check out these articles and videos for some quick insights into what the fuss is all about:

Four Sigmatic’s Mushroom Academy: This 12-part video series is a wonderful immersion into the power of medicinal mushrooms. Mushroom Academy is the place to go if you want to learn about chaga, cordyceps, lion’s mane (among others) and how mushrooms have been essential to good health in many cultures for centuries. The videos are made by Four Sigmatic, a company started by four friends from Finland, who are dedicated to raising awareness about mushrooms by making them drinkable and delicious. The Four Sigmatic founders created a process that extends from farming and harvesting wild forest mushrooms right through drying and extracting the essential elements to quality testing and product development.

These guys are seriously creative and have come up with ways to blend their powdered mushroom extracts to create elixirs, coffee drinks, hot cocoa blends, smoothie boosts and more. I have to confess: I’m a Four Sigmatic convert. Their products are delicious. I’ve gone from saying “No thank you,” to mushrooms, to being that person urging mushroom lattes on my friends.

Take Us to Fungi Town: Why Health Fiends Are All Over Medicinal Mushrooms: An entertaining and informative piece from Christina Chaey in Bon Appetit. This piece is a wonderful resource for anyone interested in making sense of all the new mushroom products hitting the market.  She had me hooked when she described her investigation as a “mushroom bender” and proceeded to weigh in on all sorts of new products including mushroom milk from Brooklyn juice bar Botica, a longevity drink from Anima Mundi Herbals, and products from a company called Moon Juice that makes mushroom dusts, tinctures and tonics.

Ben Greenfield’s Fitness Podcast: I’m a huge fan of Ben Greenfield’s podcast. It could be the best and most informative fitness and health resource out there. On this episode, Ben Greenfield interviews Tero Isokauppila, the co-founder of Four Sigmatic.  They talk about a number of topics (this is an hour long podcast) including:

  • The difference between medicinal mushrooms and mushrooms we buy at the store
  • How pharma companies use mushrooms
  • The harvesting process
  • The best extracts to help deal with stress, improve immunity, etc.
